Interview with Chomp, Intrepid Designer and Runner Up Best Logo Designer 2010

Having so many amazing designers on DesignCrowd.com gives us a chance to really learn a thing or two about design, the design industry and what drives a good designer. The following interview with Chomp too place via email after being awarded runner up in our best logo designers of 2010. 

Chomp gives us some insight into how he works, what he works with and who he has enjoyed working with (as well as the standard questions on how amazing DesignCrowd is.)

Design Background:

Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less - where do you live, what sort of designer are you?

I live in the United Kingdom in West London, a town called Twickenham, 5 minutes from the famous Rugby Ground.

How did you get started in design?

School, I was always into Art and my father was a Draughtsman for Gillette

How did you learn about design, what training did you get?

I did "Art" to Advanced level at School, then a 2 year Diploma in Design and Advertising at college

What is your preferred design software?

Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

What is your design process? (e.g. do you sketch out a rough, do you hit the computer first etc.)

Think. Sketch. Think. Mock-up on computer. Think. Re-sketch. Mock-up. Develop.

Where do you think creativity comes from?

Experiences, influences around you, and sometimes a "Eureka" moment

What web development or coding languages (if any) do you know?

Flash, basic HTML.

What is the best thing about being a designer?

Freedom, expression, self belief.

Describe a typical day in your life as a designer.

Tea. Emails. Think. Create. Tea. Create. Think. Coffee. And repeat.

What websites or other designers inspire you?

The old school: David Quay, Erik Spiekermann, Roy Litchenstein

What are the benefits of being a freelance designer?

Freedom...

What is your top tip to aspiring designers?

Persue, Inspire, Determination

If you weren't a designer what would you be?

Something to do with food.

Do you enjoy designing now as much as you did when you first started?

Even more, confidence in your ability and handling pressure comes with age and experience, although I miss the freedom of experimenting when you are younger (clients and deadlines often put o cosh on that!)

Exposure. A great way to expand your profile and portfolio. Client base grows from your contacts on DesignCrowd.

A Paris Wine Merchant, a world famous International Zoo, a Mac App developer and many more!

What is your favourite brief on DesignCrowd at the moment?

A world famous International Zoo - the potential is immense!

What new things would you like to see on DesignCrowd in the future?

A better portfolio section, a thumbnail of each design (6 across by "y" down), rather than having to click through page numbers - visually better and more likely a potential client will click on a thumbnail than go to page 10 of 20 for example!
